Mike Brown, a junior cornerback who was arrested after an on-campus altercation last Thursday, has been dismissed from the Cal State Fullerton football team, the school announced Tuesday.

Brown, a late-arriving transfer from Citrus College, was charged with assault and battery with great bodily harm, a misdemeanor. According to university police, Brown punched student Johnny Karnofsky, 22, in the face after the two exchanged words in a school parking lot.

“An athletic grant-in-aid at Cal State Fullerton is subject to cancellation if a person is involved in serious misconduct, and Mike Brown was, according to Detective Tom Gehrls (of the campus police department),” Coach Gene Murphy said in a statement.

“My recommendation to Athletic Director Bill Shumard was to drop Mike from our squad immediately and he concurred.”

An arraignment date has not been set for Brown, who appeared in nine games and was credited with 26 tackles and an interception this season. He also was the team’s leading punt returner with 69 yards in 12 attempts.

Maryalyce Jeremiah, Titan women’s basketball coach, received two more letters of intent Tuesday, from Shefonda Colbert of Lynwood High School and Shayla Bradshaw of Gilbert High in Higley, Ariz.

Colbert is a 5-11 center who averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots last season to help Lynwood to a 24-4 record. She also was a varsity starter during her freshman and sophomore years, when Lynwood had a combined 49-9 record.

Bradshaw is a 5-7 point guard who averaged 13 points and six assists during her junior year at Gilbert, which won the division 5-A state championship. She was a first-team all-state selection.
