OUTLOOK

After coaching the Westminster boys’ basketball team for eight years, Katz took over the girls’ team in an effort to revitalize it. For the first time in four years, the girls’ team will have an on-campus coach with Katz, who will also serve as the school’s athletic director. This will make a significant difference, and Katz said his presence is already paying dividends. “This may be the best Westminster girls’ team we’ve had in the last decade,” Katz said. That may not be saying much, considering the Lions went winless in the Sunset League last season and have “won just one league game in the past five years,” Katz said. But Katz’ plan is long term, and he feels this season will be a foundation for future seasons. “We have a girls’ basketball program now,” Katz said. “We’re back playing summer league, practicing during vacations. Its not just a November to February thing anymore.” Hook and Yoshizaki head Katz’ list of returners. Hook, the starting point guard, averaged 10 points last year and Yoshizaki averaged 12 points. “We won’t be good enough to challenge for the league title, but teams won’t get any easy wins over Westminster anymore.”
