OUTLOOK

Dukus said he accomplished what he wanted last year, making the Saints a more worthy opponent. “We took Fountain Valley, the league’s second-place team, to double overtime and had some other close games, so I think we were competitive in the league last year,” Dukus said. “We just want to stay competitive this year but hopefully have more wins to show for it.” Trotter is the Saints’ top returner after averaging 10 points per game. “She’s one of the best ballhandlers and defensive players around,” Dukus said. Also returning are Payan and Pacheco, both of whom averaged six points. “We have a lot of talented kids coming back, and most will be back next year too,” Dukus said, referring to the fact his team features only two seniors. Santa Ana hopes to break into the top four of the league, and Dukus said they will continue to play pressure man-to-man. “We’ll play physical and aggressive defense,” Dukus said. The Saints’ biggest weakness, however, is their shooting. “On a good night, maybe we’d shoot 30% last year,” Dukus said. How much Santa Ana’s shooting improves will hold the key to how much the Saints’ record improves.
