The Heralds finished third in the Olympic League last season, two games behind champion Cerritos Valley Christian. But with only one returning starter, Brown is cautious about the team’s possibilities this year. “There’s no way on paper that we’re going to be the pick of anybody (to win title), but I feel that if we can hang in there during the nonleague games in December, we can gain some confidence for league play,” Brown, who begins his fourth year with the Heralds. “Our two key things will be our defensive intensity and our ability to limit the other teams to one shot.” Brown said one of the strengths will be the outside shooting. “We have some guys who can shoot well from the perimeter,” Brown said. “Berokoff and Rutter can shoot well from three-point range.” The coach also looks at Berokoff for leadership and muscle under the boards, especially because Houser has a foot injury and it’s unknown when, if ever, he might return. “(Berokoff) is a solid rebounder . . . If he’s real aggressive for us, he can pull up the confidence of the other players.” The three players up from the junior varsity--Ream, Serrano and Salinas--also figure prominently in Brown’s plans. “Salinas and Ream have great tools. Ream is big but fairly slender, but he works hard for good position.” Serrano start at point guard.
