OUTLOOK

Trabuco Hills returns all its starters from last year’s team that finished a disappointing fourth in the league. But the Mustangs had to make room for the guy who has everyone in the league talking--Australian import Vanderputten, who has been nicknamed “The Thunder from Down Under.” An exchange student from Perth, Australia, Vanderputten has Division I college coaches and scouts flocking to games. He hasn’t disappointed, averaging 24 points in his first three games. “I had Rick Swanwick here a few years ago, and Gavin’s much more skilled,” Wulf said. “He’s not as good as (Duke’s) Cherokee Parks, but he’s agile like Cherokee. He has a nice touch outside and can go to the three-point line.” Mark these dates on your calendar--Jan. 22 and Feb. 12. That’s when Trabuco Hills meets Estancia in league play, and Vanderputten’s battles with Matt Fuerbringer, Estancia’s 6-7 center, are guaranteed classics. Vanderputten has some help up front with Kaull and Klinke, who are improving daily, and Barnes, who will join the team after playing quarterback for the Mustangs in the Division VII championship game tonight.
