OUTLOOK

A lack of height will make it tough for Laguna Beach to compete with towering teams such as Estancia and Trabuco Hills. But don’t shine the Artists off just yet. Sure, they lost Josh Borella, the county’s No. 2 scorer last season with a 30.6 average, to graduation. But they return a solid nucleus of good outside shooters, and have as much depth and quickness as anyone in the league. Gravley averaged 15.6 points and shot 45% from three-point range last season, and Ravensberg averaged 12 points and shot 46% from three-point range. “I don’t think we’re going to have any trouble scoring this year,” said Fleming, whose team has averaged 85.5 points in its first two games. “But with our size, I think we’ll have a tough time defending people.” The Artists’ inside play depends on the return of Garner, the team’s leading rebounder and defender who’s recovering from rib surgery and a blood clot in his shoulder. “We hope to have him back by Jan. 1,” Fleming said.
