In Serven’s first two seasons as coach, the Sailors lost in the second round of the Southern Section playoffs. But he has a feeling things will be different this time, despite the loss of Huy Nguyen, a second-team all-section guard who averaged 18.7 points, and his team’s lack of size and experience. “It’s not a totally dominating and imposing team when you look at us in warm-ups,” Serven said. “But it’s a nice team, and when we get to February I think we could do really well in the playoffs.” Newport Harbor started the season nicely, advancing to the finals of the Pilot Tipoff Classic before narrowly losing in overtime to Huntington Beach. McIntee, a first-team, all-league selection who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds as a junior, has made a quick adjustment to basketball after leaving the Sailors’ football team, which advanced to the Southern Section Division VI quarterfinals. Despite practicing only twice before the Sailors’ opener, McIntee averaged 28 points and 11 rebounds in the first five games. McAnlis, who averaged six points, five rebounds and three assists as a forward last season, is making the switch to point guard. “He’s got a lot of new responsibilities, which will take him some time to adjust to,” Serven said.
