PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Beats Third-Ranked Santa Ana on Ickes’ Penalty Kick
Unranked Mater Dei upset Santa Ana, 1-0, in a nonleague boys’ soccer match Friday afternoon at Mater Dei.
Trevor Ickes scored on a penalty kick seven minutes into the first half for Mater Dei (4-2-2). Ickes was awarded the kick after defender Anastico Gonzales was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.
The Saints, the Southern Section Division 4-A champions and ranked third in the county, fell to 5-2.
In other nonleague boys’ matches:
Irvine 2, Foothill 1--Danny Barrie scored twice for the host Vaqueros (6-1-1). Jacob Michael scored with 15 minutes remaining on a direct kick to end Chris Tomongin’s bid for a shutout.
Laguna Hills 2, Katella 1--Giuseppe Lombardo and Julio Montes scored in the first 10 minutes of the game for visiting Laguna Hills (6-3-1). Todd Burfeind scored in the second half for Katella (4-2-2).
Norwalk Glenn 6, Savanna 0--Roberto Guzman scored two goals for Glenn, including the team’s first midway through the first half. Chase Martin had five saves for Savanna (0-4) in the second half.
Sunny Hills 3, Valencia 2--The Lancers scored the game’s first three goals, then survived a second-half comeback at Valencia.
Eric Smith, Sam Harris and Kenny Takaki scored for Sunny Hills (3-2-1). Mario Torres and Israel Sediez had Valencia’s goals.
Trabuco Hills 2, University 1--Cordell Graham and Nate Urone each scored a goal and goalie Dan Abdalla had eight saves for Trabuco Hills (3-4-2).
Villa Park 2, Orange Lutheran 1--Dave Szekeres scored the winning goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half. Teammate Ronnie Lou scored the tying goal on a pass from James Norman. Villa Park is 8-0-1.
In Garden Grove League boys’ soccer:
Kennedy 6, Bolsa Grande 0--Robert Weber scored three first-half goals, Ryan Bean scored twice in the second half and freshman Charlie Moreno added a goal at Kennedy.
Rolando Gonzalez did not need to make a save in recording his second consecutive shutout as the Fighting Irish improved to 6-2, 2-0 in league.
Los Amigos 2, Garden Grove 1--Gabriel Aceves scored Garden Grove’s winning goal on a cross from Jose Martinez halfway through the first half. Tom Hastings scored for Garden Grove (3-3, 2-0) with 12 minutes left in the second half.
