BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita Stops Comeback by Arroyo Grande

Mike Carpenter scored 16 points and Ryan Barentine 13 as Santa Margarita withstood Arroyo Grande’s second-half comeback in a 67-64 victory in the championship game of the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Santa Margarita led, 38-17, at halftime, but Arroyo Grande cut the deficit to 53-40 after three quarters. Arroyo Grande outscored Santa Margarita, 24-14, in the fourth quarter.

Arroyo Grande’s Andy Collett led all scorers with 26 and Melvin Boykin added 22.

In the consolation final of the Dana Hills tournament:

El Dorado 71, Whittier California 65--Mike Johnson scored 20 points and Eric Hargrove had 14 points and 16 rebounds for El Dorado (4-4).

In the championship semifinals of the San Dieguito boys’ tournament:

Trabuco Hills 73, San Dieguito 65--Corey Klinke scored 21 points and Gavin Vanderputten had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Trabuco Hills (7-2), which advanced to play Torrey Pines in the championship Monday night. Brett Poulos had nine points and nine assists for the Mustangs.

In the consolation semifinals of the San Dieguito boys’ tournament:

Crescenta Valley 47, Dana Hills 34--Justin Hinzy had 12 points as the Dolphins fell to 1-7.

In the first round of the Century boys’ tournament:

Los Amigos 85, Costa Mesa 71--Eddie Benson had 29 points for Los Amigos (2-1) and Jeff Pickens had 24 for Costa Mesa (3-4).

Savanna 63, Garden Grove 60--Marlon Watson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Savanna (7-2). Cornell Archer led Garden Grove (2-5) with 27 points.

In the Santa Barbara girls’ Tournament of Champions:

Brea-Olinda 59, Cerritos 48--Nicole Erickson scored 16 points and Jody Anton added 15 to lead Brea-Olinda in a consolation semifinal.

Katie Bauer and Sara Beckley added 11 points each for Brea-Olinda, which plays Poway for fifth place 3:30 p.m. Monday at Santa Barbara High.
