Huskies Roll in Tournament Behind Guards

Share

North Hollywood High breezed through three Bell-Jeff basketball tournament games en route to the championship last week, winning by an average of 25.7 points a game, largely behind the play of guards DeShawn Harvey, a senior, and Damon Ollie, a sophomore.

Harvey scored 57 points in the tournament, raising his average from 14.8 to 15.7 points a game. Ollie has scored in double figures in all 14 North Hollywood games and is averaging 16.1 points.

The Huskies (13-1) have won nine in a row.

Offense: Live by it, die by it. Taft guard Casey Sheahan made a tournament record 15 three-point baskets in four games of the Eagle Rock tournament last week, but Taft experienced the other end of the spectrum in the third-place game Monday when it made three of 35 three-point attempts in a 46-40 loss to Eagle Rock. Normally reliable forward Miguel Carrillo, a steady 40% shooter from three-point range, made one of eight attempts. Sheahan missed on two attempts. . . .

Nordhoff senior guard Tim Sebek scored 74 points in three games last week in the Ventura tournament, including 36 in a 66-61 double-overtime, consolation-final win over Channel Islands. Sebek, who became the first Nordhoff player chosen to the all-Ventura tournament team, was just one point shy of Tim Siefken’s 1977 school single-game record of 37. . . .

Senior guard Nacho Vega of Nordhoff had eight three-point baskets in the first two games of the Ventura tournament before going 0 for 12 from three-point range and 0 for 13 from the field against Channel Islands. Vega made both of his free throws, however. . . .

Josh Hinrichs is averaging 19.9 points a game for Saugus. Hinrichs, who scored 30 points against Cabrillo in the Hart tournament, has made 19 of 45 (42.2%) three-point attempts. Saugus’ Steve Tampus, who is averaging 16 points a game, has made 43 of 57 (75.4%) free throws. . . .

Three Crespi players, led by guard Rob Leff (23 points), are averaging more that 10 points a game. The others are forward Randy Coleman (17) and center Matt Carpenter (10). Coleman and Carpenter are each averaging 12 rebounds. . . .

Girls: Alemany’s Sarah Guziel, a 6-foot-2 senior center, is averaging 13.5 points and 13 rebounds for the Indians (12-3). Sophomore forward Zevette Mitchell is averaging 10 rebounds. . . .
