SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The weather was predictably bad Thursday during the opening round of the Simi Valley soccer tournament--an event that in recent years has been held in high winds and cold temperatures--and the winning performances of the host Pioneers also followed the norm.

Simi Valley High took a heart-stopping, 3-2 decision over Chaminade in a shootout in the second round of the 32-team tournament. In addition the Pioneers, who won the tournament championship in 1990 and were runners-up last season, defeated Ventura in the first round, 4-0. They will play Moorpark in today’s quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m.

Against Chaminade, the Pioneers (3-1-2) took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Scott Miller in the third minute and a 2-1 advantage when Tevin Nelson ripped in a 20-yard blast from the right wing 29 minutes into the contest. But a goal by Chaminade’s John Steinkamp in the 47th minute tied the score. Darren Johnson scored the Eagles’ first goal in the 27th minute.

In the shootout, Johnson scored again for Chaminade (4-4) and Travis Nicholson matched the goal for the Pioneers. The next four shooters missed, although it took a diving save by Pioneer goalie Mike Jones on Jason Hartung’s shot.

Simi Valley went in front when Steinkamp, playing in place of regular goalie Jason Simmers in the shootout, guessed incorrectly and dived to the right corner as Greg Krier drilled the ball high into the center of the net.

Andy Krekorian tied the score for Chaminade with a shot off Jones’ hands. But on Simi Valley’s fifth and final shot, Mauro Ruiz sent a blast off Steinkamp’s hands high into the left corner.
