BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Vaughan Leads Ventura

Curt Vaughan led a balanced offensive attack with 17 points as Ventura High beat Santa Barbara, 68-63, Friday night in a Channel League opener at Ventura.

Randy Martinez scored 16 points and teammates Martin Nunes and Darien Roberts each added 15 for Ventura (10-2, 1-0 in league play). The score was tied, 48-48, after three periods.

In other boys’ games:

San Marcos 64, Rio Mesa 57--Rob Ramaker scored 33 points, including 14 of 17 free throws, to lead San Marcos in a Channel League opener at Rio Mesa.

Swanson Nunnery scored 18 points and Jason MacLean contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for Rio Mesa (4-6, 0-1).

Dos Pueblos 49, Oxnard 43--Nick Athanasakis scored 21 points to lead Dos Pueblos (6-6, 1-0) in a Channel League opener at Oxnard. Larry Bumpus scored 10 points and teammate Jasper Satterwhite added nine for Oxnard (4-7, 0-1).

Grant 54, Palisades 35--Wayne Carlisle scored a game-high 22 points to lead Grant in the first round of the Grant tournament.

Grant (7-5) took a 32-11 halftime lead after outscoring Palisades, 22-6, in the second quarter.

Kennedy 46, Birmingham 33--Just five players show up for Kennedy in its first-round Grant tournament game but they proved more than enough.

Kennedy’s Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 22 points and Shauhin Calesh added 14.

Carlos Avelar scored 16 points, including 12 on three-point baskets, for Birmingham (6-6).

North Hollywood 79, Huntington Park 40--Ten players scored for the Huskies in their victory over Huntington Park in the championship of the Sherman Oaks CES tournament.

DeShawn Harvey scored a team-high 14 points for North Hollywood (15-1), and teammates Jamaal Johnson and Robert Hill each added 13. Anson Credille scored 12 off the bench.

Nordhoff 82, Santa Ynez 57--Tim Sebek scored 10 of his 21 points in the first quarter and finished with 13 rebounds and seven assists for host Nordhoff (7-5) in the nonleague game. Mark Sebek had 14 points. Teammate Kevin Cochran added 16 points, including 10 in Nordhoff’s 31-point first quarter.

Hart 89, Loyola 77--Senior forward Ali Peek had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and Erik Stephens added 17 points and 10 rebounds for host Hart in a nonleague game.

With their team leading, 35-34, at halftime, Hart’s Andy Arriaga (14 points) and Matt Steffe (13 points) combined for five three-point shots in the third quarter as the Indians built a 66-52 advantage.

Bishop Montgomery 47, Chaminade 45--Leading by four entering the fourth quarter, the host Eagles (5-8, 0-1) managed only one field goal the rest of the way in dropping their Mission League opener. Richard Fei paced Chaminade with 19 points and Travis Hall contributed 11 rebounds.

Quartz Hill 44, Highland 41--Ryan Beckstead scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the visiting Rebels (6-3) in a nonleague game.

Holy Martyrs 74, San Francisco Christian 67--Sako Balian totaled 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Armens (6-3) cruised to the championship game of the Valley Christian Academy tournament.

Bell-Jeff 51, Littlerock 50--Brian Lee scored 22 points in leading the visiting Guards to a nonleague victory at Littlerock.

James Cain led the Lobos (11-2) with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Louis Bryant added 18 points.

MEN

Oxnard 90, L.A. Trade Tech 73--With the score tied, 35-35, at halftime, the Condors (9-7) used a strong inside game to pull away from host Trade Tech (10-7) in a nonconference game. Five Oxnard players scored in double figures, led by center Art Wallace with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

GIRLS

Bell-Jeff 50, Diamond Bar 41--Lori Talley, Lori Leon and Christina Ticsay each scored 12 points as Bell-Jeff (11-2) advanced to the final of its own tournament tonight at 8 against Bishop Montgomery.
