VALLEY SPORTS ROUNDUP : Simi Valley Defeats Agoura, 61-37

Share

The much-anticipated battle between Simi Valley and Agoura highs, two teams expected to contend for the Marmonte League boys’ basketball title this season, barely materialized Monday.

Host Simi Valley made 12 of its first 19 field goals and seldom was threatened in a 61-37 win. The Pioneers, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, improved to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

“We were real excited to come out and get the win,” Simi Valley Coach Dean Bradshaw said. “But that was not the Agoura team that the rest of the Marmonte League will see this season.”

Agoura (7-3, 0-1) scored only three points in the third quarter and was outscored, 36-18, in the second half. The Chargers were hampered when senior forward Eddie Corridori, the leading scorer with 17.7 points a game, got into early foul trouble and eventually fouled out with only five points.

“He’s one of the better players in the league, so they weren’t the same team without him on the floor,” Bradshaw said.

Gordon Stolla, a senior forward, was six for eight from the field and had game-high totals of 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead Simi Valley. Simi Valley was 20 of 38 (52%) from the field.

Simi Valley senior forward Danny Alexander, who entered the game averaging 17.5 points a game, was limited to seven.

“He didn’t score a lot, but he made a big difference on the floor,” Bradshaw said of Alexander, who had nine rebounds.
