Rancho Santiago College wide receiver Tony Pena has signed a letter of intent to attend Oklahoma on a football scholarship.

Pena, 6 feet 4, 220 pounds, caught 25 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns for Rancho Santiago last season. He also had offers from Texas, Nevada Reno and Idaho State.

Pena was named the county’s prep athlete of the year in 1989 after outstanding seasons in football and baseball at Mater Dei. He was the county’s second-leading receiver his senior year, catching 64 passes for 1,093 yards. He decided to accept a baseball scholarship at Arizona State, but injured his right shoulder diving for a bunt during his sophomore season. He transferred to Rancho Santiago to resume his football career.

“Tony hasn’t ruled out the possibility of playing baseball at Oklahoma,” said his father, Tony Sr. “He could play first base if he decided to go that route.”
