HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Hoover Needs Overtime to Beat Mission Bay; Mira Mesa Routs Crawford

Hoover’s Khar Vun came into the game late in the fourth quarter and hit a three-pointer to pull his team even with Mission Bay for the first time in the game. Regulation ended in the deadlock, at 54-54, but Hoover (2-9) prevailed in overtime, 64-58.

Mission Bay (5-9) proved its own worst enemy by making only five of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Free throws continued to haunt Mission Bay in the extra period as Hoover’s Tony Maxwell sank four and scored once from the field to contribute six of Hoover’s 10 overtime points. Maxwell finished with a game-high 23.

For Mission Bay, Chris Smith scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, and Robert Redd added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

In other nonleague games:

Mira Mesa 83, Crawford 40--Brendan Hause opened the game with eight unanswered points for Mira Mesa (11-3), hitting two three-pointers and a two-point field goal. Twelve Marauders scored and Ryan Cunningham led the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Hause finished with 14 points.

Monte Vista 71, Santana 34--Third-ranked Monte Vista went on a 17-1 run that began late in the first quarter and carried into the second. Marty Ellis scored eight of the 17 and finished with 18. Teammate Aaron Elliott scored a game-high 23 and Matt Ehlke came down with 12 rebounds for Monte Vista (12-1). Santana fell to 2-8.

Valhalla 69, Mt. Miguel 57--Tenth-ranked Valhalla starts a sophomore and four juniors, but the youthful Norsemen play like they’re more experienced. Valhalla (11-5) took a commanding 38-16 halftime lead and had little trouble maintaining it.

Derrick Freeman and Scott Biddle had a combined effort of 31 points and pulled down 10 rebounds apiece for Valhalla. Sophomore Beau Sager had 10 assists for the Norsemen. Marcos Gallardo scored all his 19 points in the second half to lead Mt. Miguel (7-7). Teammate Reggie Jones scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Grossmont 78, West Hills 54--Four players scored in double figures for Grossmont (9-4). Leading the Highlanders were Vince Clark (16 points, five steals), Mike Kingsley (13 points, eight assists), Earl Kell (13 points), Winter Phoenix (12 points) and Aaron Bolin (12 rebounds, six points). Dan Castenada scored 13 points for West Hills (5-6).

Helix 58, El Cajon Valley 30--Helix’s half-court, man-to-man defense stymied El Cajon in the first half, limiting the Braves to 12 points. Offensively, Lloyd Lake led Helix with 14 points and Kevin Hagen added 13.

Granite Hills 53, El Capitan 46--Bobby Allums and Mark Kluge scored 19 and 13 points to put Granite Hills (6-5) above the .500 mark. Brian Hawkins scored 15 points to lead El Capitan.

Lincoln 73, USDHS 59--Hosa Baker scored 22 and teammate Berry Randle added 15 to lift Lincoln (8-7). USDHS sank to 2-9.

GIRLS

Palomar League

Poway 51, Fallbrook 39--Fallbrook pulled to 35-32 at the end of the third quarter, but top-ranked Poway wore down the Warriors in the fourth, where they outscored Fallbrook, 17-7. All Fallbrook’s points in the fourth came on free throws.

Poway (11-2, 1-0) was led by Kara Milling, who had 13 points. Marcia Jeffries paced the Warriors (5-5, 0-1) with 19. Teammate Stacey Fordice had 15 rebounds.

Mt. Carmel 69, Rancho Buena Vista 34--Chris Grazzini had a fine supporting cast from second-ranked Mt. Carmel, not that she needed it with her 20 points--12 of which came in the first quarter--16 rebounds and six blocked shots. But teammates Angie Cooper contributed 16 points and Jennifer Alley 10 for the sweep.

Mt. Carmel (6-2, 1-0) led, 38-17, at the half. For RBV, Jenny Harris scored 12 points and Tori Anderson added 10.

Avocado League

Rancho Bernardo 72, Ramona 30--Ramona trailed 22-19 with three minutes to go in the half before third-ranked Rancho Bernardo went on a 13-1 run that deflated Ramona (0-10, 0-1).

Rancho Bernardo (10-1, 1-0) had three players in double figures: Carol Pajarillo led all scorers with 19 points, Amy Franzen added 18 and Robin Blalock had 16. Cindy Johnson scored 10 points for Ramona.
