ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Girls Prevail in Overtime

Capistrano Valley, the county’s second-ranked girls’ basketball team, needed a free throw by Alisa Farr to send the game into overtime, where the Cougars defeated Newport Harbor, 57-51, in a nonleague game Saturday night at Newport Harbor.

Angie White scored 16 points and Katie Scott 14 for the Cougars (15-1), who outscored the Sailors, 6-0, in the overtime.

Kala Ross scored a game-high 27 points for Newport Harbor before fouling out during regulation.

In other nonleague girls’ basketball:

Estancia 39, Mission Viejo 38--Leah Braatz had 15 points, 10 rebounds and six steals as the visiting Eagles (9-6) rallied from a five-point, fourth-quarter deficit to upset the No. 9 Diablos.

Mission Viejo had a chance for a victory or to send the game into overtime when Maggie Gorska was fouled by Liz Romero taking a desperation three-point shot as time expired. Gorska made the first of three free throws, but missed the next two.

Kelly McGlothlin led the Diablos with 11 points.

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Laguna Beach 76, Moorpark 52--Tom Ravensberg scored 11 of his 16 points in the first quarter as the Artists (10-5) led, 21-9, after the first eight minutes. Laguna Beach’s Darren Gravley led all scorers with 21 points and Trigg Garner (11) and Brad Berberian (11) also finished in double figures.

In Angelus League boys’ soccer:

Mater Dei 3, St. John Bosco 0--Joe Ney, R.J. Kelley and Chris Campbell scored for the host Monarchs (10-4-2).

Santa Margarita 1, Servite 0--Chad Cardenas took a crossing pass from Jason Hewitt and scored from six yards with one minute left in the first half for the visiting Eagles (8-3-3, 1-0).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ soccer:

Estancia 4, Laguna Beach 0--Lauren Weaver, Tracie Manz, Taia Newland and Danielle Straub all scored second-half goals for the Eagles (8-1-2, 1-0) at Trabuco Hills.
