Running back E.J. Watson of La Jolla, defensive lineman La’Roi Glover of Point Loma and Coach Herb Meyer of El Camino received the three highest honors Sunday at The Times’ annual all-county football awards breakfast at the La Jolla Mariott.

Watson was named the 1991 San Diego County back of the year, Glover the lineman of the year and Meyer the coach of the year, as selected by The Times’ staff.

Selections were based upon achievements during the regular season, but this year’s cream rose to the top during the San Diego Section playoffs.

In leading the Vikings to a 10-0 mark during the regular season, Watson rushed for 1,654 yards, averaging 9.1 yards per carry, and scored 20 touchdowns.

In the playoffs, he backed up a 250-yard performance in the quarterfinals with a section-record 370-yard, seven-touchdown night in the semifinals as La Jolla advanced to the finals with a 50-49 victory over San Pasqual. Watson finished with 2,501 yards, third best in section history.

“This award is a real honor, particularly this year,” said Watson, a first-team member as a defensive back in 1990. “There were a ton of good backs this year.”

Glover was key to the Pointers’ 9-1 mark during the regular season and 4-0 during the playoffs.

With Glover and teammates posting one of the finest defensive stands in section history, Point Loma’s 14-0 victory over previously undefeated Vista in the 3-A championship game was considered by some a blowout.

Glover, a 6-foot-3, 276-pound two-time first-team selection, mixed 17 1/2 sacks among his 77 tackles, recovered six fumbles, caused six others and batted down three passes this season.

Bennie Edens, his coach, says Glover is good enough to start on most college teams now.

Meyer, who was expected to win at El Camino, did. The Wildcats capped a 13-1 season the same way they had the previous two years--with a convincing victory in the 2-A title game.

It was Meyer’s seventh overall championship, a section record.

“It’s tough to be as good as they say you’re going to be. But somehow we managed to do it,” Meyer said.

How did they do it?

“One, we had great kids,” Meyer said. “But the guys that don’t get the recognition are the assistant coaches. I’ve got a great staff.”
