COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Men Top UC San Diego in Volleyball

Leland Quinn had 17 kills to lead UC Irvine to a 15-13, 15-10, 15-5 nonconference men’s volleyball victory over UC San Diego in front of 207 at Crawford Hall Friday night.

Shahi Ghanem had 11 kills and Jason Hinchman had 43 assists as the Anteaters evened their record at 1-1. Nate Brown had 17 kills for the Tritons (0-3).

In Big West Conference men’s swimming and diving:

Nevada Las Vegas 167, UC Irvine 123--Erik Walton and Pat Keenan each won individual races and swam a leg on the Anteaters’ victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team at Crawford Hall pool.

Walton, a sophomore and 1990 Corona del Mar High graduate, won the 100-yard backstroke in 52.70 seconds. Keenan took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.11.

Irvine (5-2, 1-1) also got victories from Jeff Klatt in the 100-yard butterfly (1:56.91) and Greg Dovidio in three-meter diving.

In Big West Conference women’s swimming and diving:

Nevada Las Vegas 158, UC Irvine 107--Freshman Laurel Hooper (500- and 1,000-yard freestyles) and junior Danielle Pajer (200-yard breaststroke) were the only individual winners for the Anteaters (8-3, 1-2) at Crawford Hall pool.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

CS Los Angeles 65, Chapman 61--After trailing, 28-20, at halftime, Chapman rallied to take a 39-36 lead with 12:50 remaining, but the Golden Eagles regained control. Renee Dabney and Kim Bly each scored 15 points for Los Angeles (7-10, 1-2). Marvette Williams scored 18 points, and Julie King added 12 for the Panthers (6-8, 0-2).
