Point Loma’s Glover Commits to the Aztecs

La’Roi Glover, a 6-foot-3, 276-pound defensive end at Point Loma High, has orally committed to play football for San Diego State, according to his mother, Dorothy.

Glover was chosen The Times’ San Diego County Lineman of the Year. He also was named to the All-County team as a junior. The statistics he piled up during his senior year--77 tackles, 17 1/2 sacks, six fumble recoveries, six fumbles caused and three batted passes--led Pointer Coach Bennie Edens to insist Glover is already good enough to start for most college teams.

Glover already had visited UCLA and Fresno State in additon to SDSU and apparently has canceled trips to Cal and Washington.

FOOTBALL

Although Bobby Ross has completed the hiring of his new Chargers coaching staff, he will interview Nevada Coach Chris Ault today.

“It’s a credit to the fine job Chris Ault has done at Reno,” General Manager Bobby Beathard said. “Chris is someone we would like to have the opportunity to talk with.”

Ted Tollner, former Chargers assistant head coach, was in Pittsburgh Tuesday interviewing for the Steelers’ offensive coordinator post.

Bobby Jackson, former Chargers running backs coach, is expected to join Phoenix.

The Steelers also are reportedly interested in talking to Ed White, the Chargers’ former tight ends/H-backs coach, while the 49ers want to talk with Charlie Joiner, the team’s former wide receivers coach. Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Seattle are interested in Alex Gibbs, the Chargers’ former offensive line coach, and Jim Mora, the team’s former defensive backs coach, continues to be courted by Seattle and Cincinnati.
