PREP ROUNDUP : Trabuco Hills Girls Edge Estancia

Share

Trabuco Hills found a way to crack Estancia’s defense and take over first place in the Pacific Coast League with a 1-0 victory in a girls’ soccer match Tuesday at Trabuco Hills High.

Senior forward Kristen Lowery scored for Trabuco Hills (16-2-2, 4-0 in league) off a long pass from Theresa Summa nine minutes into the second half.

It was only the seventh goal Estancia (10-2-2, 3-1) has allowed in 14 matches this season and the second given up to Trabuco Hills in three matches over the past two seasons.

Last year, these teams played to 1-1 and 0-0 ties to finish with identical 8-0-2 league records and a split of the PCL title. Trabuco Hills won the league title in 1990.

“We’ve been shooting for this since last year and we knew we had to beat them on our home field,” said Trabuco Hills Coach Bob Daman, whose team entered the game ranked third in Southern Section 3-A. Estancia “is a good team that matches up well with us and should be ranked in the top 10,” Daman said.

Following a scoreless first half, Summa launched a high pass that Lowery chased down in front of the penalty box. Lowery had only Estancia goalie Kristina Grigaitis to beat, and she did with a low crossing shot just inside the right post.

Two minutes before the goal, Estancia had its best scoring opportunity when Danielle Straub’s shot hit the post from the right side. Estancia outshot Trabuco Hills, 9-8, but was frustrated on offense by 10 offside calls.

Both Grigaitis and Trabuco Hills goalie Shannon Pickett finished with five saves.
