SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Despite being undefeated in the Sea View League, Tustin boys’ basketball Coach Tom McCluskey hadn’t been pleased with his team’s play. That changed Friday.

With guard Jentry Moore leading the way with 24 points, seventh-ranked Tustin ran its unbeaten string in league to five games with a 58-41 victory over Newport Harbor Friday at Tustin High School.

The victory was Tustin’s 13th in its past 14 games, and sixth consecutive since losing to Estancia in the final of the Coast Classic tournament in December.

“This was our best game in league so far,” McCluskey said, “We played better offensively and defensively than we have.”

Especially Moore. He scored 15 of his 24 in the second half, 10 in the third quarter, as the Tillers broke open a close game and pulled away.

Tustin center Tab Reid added 14 points, 10 in the first half, and pulled down eight rebounds.

Tustin (15-6, 5-0 in league) led 26-17 at halftime before Newport Harbor (10-9, 2-3) cut the lead to two, 26-24, with a 7-0 run open the third quarter.

But after the two teams exchanged baskets, the Sailors managed only one basket over a 10-minute span.

Tustin guard Maurice Fletcher sparked the defense with five steals.

Only three Newport Harbor Players scored until the final minute of the game. Forward Justin McIntee led Newport Harbor with 14 points, and Mark McAnlis and Wade Tift added 10 each.
