La Quinta High School baseball Coach Dave Demarest has been named an assistant coach of the junior national team that will compete for the world championship in Monterrey, Mexico, Aug. 21-Sept. 2.

Demarest will join head Coach Joe Ross of Normandale Community College in Minnesota and Tom Hilton of Dennis Community College in Kansas to coach a team of 17- and 18-year-old players. Demarest served as an assistant for the gold-medal winning West team that competed in the Olympic Festival last summer in Los Angeles.

The U.S. team is expected to compete against national teams from Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Chinese-Taipei, Venezuela and Italy. Canada is the defending champion.

Demarest, an 18-year veteran at La Quinta, has led teams to seven Garden Grove League titles and 16 postseason playoff appearances. La Quinta lost to Lompoc in the Division 3-A title game in 1979.
