COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Free Throws Help Cypress Survive Wild Finish, Beat Orange Coast

Cypress College moved into a second place with a 68-63 victory over Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday at Orange Coast.

OCC trailed, 64-62, with 18 seconds left when the Pirates’ Michael Wenzlaff tried a three-pointer, which missed. Cypress’ David Boyle got the rebound and OCC’s Matt Manwarren was called for intentional foul against Boyle, then the two got into a pushing match. Boyle was called for a technical foul.

Boyle made two free throws to give Cypress a 66-62 lead with 17 seconds left. OCC’s Agustin Heredia then made one of the two technical foul shots and the Pirates kept the ball, trailing, 66-63.

Cypress knocked the inbounds pass loose and Bill Banks of the Chargers recovered it and was fouled with two seconds left. He made both free throws. Cypress is 17-7, 4-2 in conference play, one game behind Rancho Santiago, which was idle.

Sam Sabbara had 15 points, Boyle 14 and Banks 12 for Cypress. Heredia had 20 points and Jeff Porter 12 for OCC (9-14, 1-5).

In other conference games:

Golden West 81, Saddleback 62--Scott Campbell had 14 points, 12 in the second half, for host Golden West (12-14, 3-3), which stopped a three-game losing streak. Saddleback got as close as 53-50 with 11:09 left but Golden West then went on a 24-3 run over the next eight minutes.

Mark Johnson and Paig Parish had 12 points each also for Golden West. Ray Ankton and Jody Smith had 16 points each and Dee Boyer had 13 for Saddleback (11-11, 2-4).

Fullerton 78, Riverside 70--Bob Terry had 35 points to become only the 10th player in Fullerton history to score more than 1,000 points in his career. Terry, a 6-foot-10 forward, made nine of 13 shots from the field and was 14 of 14 on free throws.

Garry Hunter added 16 points for Fullerton (11-10, 3-3). Riverside is 17-10, 3-3.
