Dennis Rodman, the 6-foot-8 forward for the Detroit Pistons, grabbed 25 more rebounds Friday night at Auburn Hills, Mich., to spark a 109-98 victory over the Miami Heat.

Rodman, who had 32 rebounds Tuesday night, the most in four years in the NBA, has had 79 in three games and has raised his average to 18.0. He has had 20 or more rebounds in 18 of his last 27 games. During that stretch he has had 46% of Detroit’s rebounds.

The last player to average 18 rebounds was Elvin Hayes in 1973-74.

“He’s just phenomenal,” Piston Coach Chuck Daly said. “He never had a chance to post those numbers in previous seasons because we couldn’t give him the necessary playing time.

“He has been the bright spot in what has been a difficult season.”

Rodman also made four of the five shots he took. Joe Dumars scored 11 of his 29 during the fourth quarter to ensure the victory, while Isiah Thomas added 27 points and 10 assists.

Golden State 124, Denver 103--Billy Owens scored 12 of his 19 points during the third quarter as the Warriors outscored Denver, 33-14, at Oakland and went on to end a three-game losing streak.

The Warriors, with Chris Mullin scoring 26 points without playing during the fourth quarter, completed their first-ever four-game season sweep of the Nuggets, who fell to 3-16 on the road.

After a 60-60 halftime tie, the Warriors took a 93-74 lead into the fourth quarter. Golden State scored the period’s first eight points--six by Owens--and then used runs of 14-0 and 19-2 to put the game away.

Denver was three for 18 from the field and committed 10 turnovers during the first 10 minutes of the third quarter.

The Warriors took their biggest lead, 103-80, on Chris Gatling’s tip-in with 8:30 to play.

New York 125, Washington 114--After wasting a 20-point lead at Landover, Md., the Knicks won in overtime.

Patrick Ewing, who had only 14 points in regulation, scored six points as the Knicks outscored the Bullets, 17-6, in overtime.

After taking a 68-51 halftime lead, the Knicks had only 40 points during the next 24 minutes. They led by only 108-106 when Xavier McDaniel, who was 12 for 16 from the field, was fouled with five seconds remaining. He missed both free throws, then fouled out, fouling Michael Adams with two seconds left in regulation. Adams then sent the game into overtime.

Milwaukee 102, Boston 100--Moses Malone prevailed over Robert Parish at center and the Bucks ended their five-game losing streak in this game at Milwaukee.

Malone scored 11 of his 25 points during the fourth quarter and had 11 rebounds. Parish had eight points and nine rebounds.

“Moses just keeps going . . . he’s relentless,” Parish said.

Chicago 107, Dallas 92--Michael Jordan didn’t like the idea of being swept in Texas, so he sparked the second-half surge in Dallas that ended the Bulls’ second two-game losing streak of the season.

In another slow start, the Bulls didn’t get the lead over the Mavericks, who lost for the 15th time in 16 games, until late in the first half.

But Jordan and Scottie Pippen turned it on in the third quarter and the Bulls easily improved to 38-7. Jordan had 25 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Philadelphia 112, Orlando 88--It appears the 76ers took to heart the lecture by owner Harold Katz concerning their half-hearted play against weak teams.

After a slow start at Philadelphia against the Magic, which has the next-to-the-worst record in the NBA, the 76ers finally pulled away.

The 76ers trailed, 24-14, after 9 1/2 minutes. Then, outscoring the Magic, 45-10, in the next 14 1/2 minutes, they made it a romp.

Four minutes into the last quarter the 76ers, who had lost two in a row, led by 100-59.

San Antonio 103, Minnesota 101--David Robinson turned in one of his best performances and it helped the Spurs to beat the Timberwolves at San Antonio.

The Timberwolves, before losing their 10th in a row and 36th in 43 games, led by six points with five minutes left, not falling behind until Rod Strickland’s driving layup made the score 102-100 with 49 seconds to play.

Portland 113, New Jersey 108--The Nets held a 108-107 lead at Portland until Clyde Drexler was fouled with 14 seconds to play and made both free throws.

Utah 117, Phoenix 116--Delany Rudd sank a 15-foot shot from the corner with 2.5 seconds to play in overtime at Salt Lake City to give the Jazz the victory.

The Suns wasted a five-point lead in the last 2 1/2 minutes of regulation.

Seattle 122, Charlotte 105--Shawn Kemp came off the bench at Charlotte to get 22 points and 21 rebounds for the SuperSonics.

The Hornets held the SuperSonics even for three quarters, but then faded.

Indiana 115, Atlanta 106--Chuck Person scored six of his 31 points in overtime at Indianapolis after the Pacers wasted an eight-point lead during the fourth quarter.

Even without the injured Dominique Wilkins, the Hawks stayed close.
