The Orange Coast and Cypress baseball teams split two games in the College of the Desert tournament during the weekend and Sunday they decided to share the title.
Orange Coast defeated Cypress, 13-10, Sunday and would have to have beaten the Chargers a second time to take the title outright. But before the game the coaches decided to share the title if the Pirates won.
Orange Coast (3-1) took a 12-0 lead after three innings before Cypress (3-1) rallied with two in the sixth, three in the seventh and five in the eighth. The Pirates’ Greg Folsom had two hits, including a triple, and two runs batted in. Folsom also had a triple in Orange Coast’s 13-8 victory over Santa Monica in the losers’ bracket semifinal earlier Sunday. However, Folsom crashed into the outfield wall casing a fly in the championship game and might have broken his hand.
Cypress’ Kevin Clark was named most valuable player of the tournament.
Cypress beat Orange Coast, 10-9, in the championship bracket semifinal, which was finished late Saturday night. Ron Hernandez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth after Charles Gipson had tied the score with a two-run single earlier in the inning.
In the Fullerton/Cerritos tournament:
Los Angeles Harbor 2, Fullerton 0--Tim Carman gave up only three hits in seven innings but Harbor scored unearned runs in the fourth and seventh innings to advance to today’s 2 p.m. championship game against host Cerritos.
In the Rancho Santiago tournament:
Long Beach 7, Rancho Santiago 3--Chris Lugo had two doubles and an RBI and Tony Truel had two hits and an RBI, but Rancho Santiago (2-2) lost its second consecutive game to Long Beach.
