Mater Dei needed second-half goals by Kim Donohue and Katie Ward to defeat visiting Rosary, 2-0, Tuesday in an Angelus League girls’ soccer match.

The Monarchs (18-1-2, 5-0-1 in league) took 10 of the first 11 shots in the match and finished with 29 shots to six for Rosary (8-6-4, 2-4-1).

“We were shooting and taking quality shots,” Mater Dei Coach Becki Schelhorse said. “We’ve been in a mini-slump lately, not taking many shots or scoring many goals, so I was happy to see all the shots we took.”

The shots paid off 20 minutes into the second half when Donohue, a senior midfielder, lifted a left-footed effort over Rosary goalkeeper Helen Baron for a score. Donohue’s goal was set up by a pass from midfielder Trisha Abe.

Mater Dei, ranked third in the Southern Section 4-A, scored again with seven minutes left. Junior forward Katie Ward, taking a pass from Joey Sisco, pulled Baron out of the goal and slipped the ball past her on the left side.
