HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Pirates Add a Slip to El Camino’s Slide

Share

When your record is 2-16 and the losses are coming in bunches of five, it is hard to pinpoint your frustrations on one or two games. But El Camino Coach Terry Scaife won’t forget this week. The Wildcats went down in two overtime games, both of which Scaife said his girls should have won.

Thursday’s defeat at home to rival Oceanside left a particularly bad taste in his mouth. Leading until the final 1:30 of regulation, the Wildcats lost, 45-42.

The Pirates improved to 4-16 by outscoring El Camino, 8-5, in overtime after Rachel Cummings made her only two baskets of the game--a pair of backboard-rattling bank shots. Oceanside pulled into a tie with El Camino for sixth place in the Avocado League. Both teams are 2-8.

“We’re young, but I can’t use that (excuse) anymore,” said Scaife. “They’ve got to grow up. They’re going through the motions right now. It’s frustrating.”

The loss came on the heels of the Wildcats’ 47-40 overtime defeat on Tuesday to the current Avocado leader, No. 2 Carlsbad. El Camino relinquished a lead in the final seconds in that one before collapsing in overtime.

“We played a tremendous game against Carlsbad,” said Scaife. “We had them beat, too. With 38 seconds left we scored to go ahead. But we scored too early and they tied it with nine seconds left and we couldn’t make a three-pointer.”

El Camino led, 21-11, at halftime Thursday and got a 23-point, 10-rebound performance from sophomore center Lisa Flores. Tina Clendening, a 6-foot-2 sophomore forward, added nine points and 11 rebounds. But the Pirates, led by Kristy Evans’ 16 points and Nyke Burnside’s 13, turned a three-point Wildcat lead with 90 seconds left into an Oceanside victory.
