NHL ROUNDUP : Maple Leafs Overcome Injury to Fuhr

Share

Not even the loss of their No. 1 goalie can slow down the Toronto Maple Leafs.

When Grant Fuhr was carried off on a stretcher early in the second period Tuesday night at Toronto, the Maple Leafs trailed the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1.

With Rick Wamsley a perfect replacement, the Maple Leafs rallied to beat the Norris Division leaders, 4-3, on Brian Bradley’s power-play goal with two seconds to play.

Although they are last in the division, the Maple Leafs trail Detroit by only 12 points after their eighth victory in nine games.

Fuhr suffered a knee injury in a fluke accident involving teammate Jamie Macoun. Fuhr was down when the defenseman, skating through the crease to retrieve a rebound, hooked Fuhr’s right leg with his right skate.

The extent of the injury will be determined today.

Wamsley played the last 25 minutes and, with the defense tightening up, faced only 14 shots to gain his third victory without a loss.

Hartford 5, Buffalo 1--Kay Whitmore stopped 30 shots at Hartford and held the Sabres scoreless for 50 minutes to end the Whalers’ 14-game winless streak.

Center Andrew Cassels and defenseman Zarley Zalapski each scored twice for the Whalers, who won for the first time since Jan. 2. During their slump they were 0-8-6.

Washington 4, Quebec 3--When Bill Lindsay, playing in his fourth game, scored 17 seconds into the final period at Quebec, it appeared the Nordiques’ slump might end.

But the 3-1 lead lasted less than half the period, and when Dale Hunter scored with 4:38 remaining, the Nordiques had lost their fifth consecutive game. The Nordiques are in a 1-15-1 slump and are tied with the San Jose Sharks for fewest points, 30, in 55 games.

Hunter scored the winning goal a minute after Quebec’s Owen Nolan was given a major penalty. Nolan elbowed John Druce, and when it was called to the attention of referee Paul Stewart that Nolan drew blood, Nolan was given a five-minute penalty.

Edmonton 5, Minnesota 4--Anatoli Semenov scored with 5:18 remaining at Bloomington, Minn., to cap the Oilers’ comeback from a 4-2 deficit.

Vincent Damphouse scored twice for the Oilers, who have won five in a row.

New York Islanders 3, Calgary 1--David Volek scored the first goal and assisted on the other two at Calgary as the Islanders improved to 3-1 on their trip West.

Glenn Healy stopped 34 shots, giving up only a goal to Gary Suter.
