COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Finally Defeats Cal Baptist in Basketball, Gains Share of First

In its third attempt of the season, the Southern California College men’s basketball team defeated Cal Baptist, 92-85, Tuesday to move back into a first-place tie in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The Vanguards (19-6, 6-2 in conference) trailed by one point at halftime but scored the first 10 points of the second half. Rick Witmer scored a game-high 23 points, making six of 12 three-point attempts, and Mike West added 20 points for the Vanguards. Warren Daniels had 22 points for Cal Baptist (13-12, 2-6).

SCC is tied for first with Westmont, and the two teams will play Saturday at SCC.

In another Golden State Athletic Conference men’s game:

Christ College Irvine 62, Point Loma Nazarene 56--Brian Hazelwood had 13 points to lead five scorers in double figures for visiting Christ College (13-13, 4-5). D’Andre Brown added 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Eagles.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Point Loma Nazarene 68, Christ College Irvine 52--Rochelle Lightner had 19 points as Point Loma Nazarene (18-6, 6-2), moved into a tie for second place in the conference. Gitte Mejer scored 14 points before fouling out for Christ College (21-4, 6-2).

Cal Baptist 75, Southern California College 63--Kristen Bevis had 19 points for host SCC, which committed 28 turnovers. Lourdes Padilla had 22 points to lead California Baptist.

In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:

La Sierra 76, Pacific Christian 74--Phil Garcia had 20 points and eight rebounds and Cory Pischel added 16 points for visiting Pacific Christian (18-15, 5-3). Emil Yacoub had 28 points, making seven of eight three-pointers for La Sierra (4-15, 4-4).

In Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. men’s volleyball:

Cal State Long Beach 3, UC Irvine 0--Leland Quinn had 20 kills and three blocks for UC Irvine (3-4, 1-4).
