SOUTHERN SECTION SOCCER PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Boys Advance by Edging La Mirada

Newport Harbor, the defending Division 1-A co-champion, scored two second-half goals and defeated La Mirada, 2-1, Thursday in the first round of the Southern Section 1-A boys’ soccer playoffs.

Garon Eikerman and Chad LaBass scored for the Sailors (10-8-3), who advance to play Sonora, a 1-0 winner over Palm Springs, in the second round Tuesday at a site to be determined.

In other Division 1-A boys’ soccer:

Troy 4, La Puente Bassett 2--Robby Ruzzi scored two goals for Troy (10-4-7), which was tied, 1-1, at the half. Troy advances to play Corona del Mar in the second round Tuesday.

Corona del Mar 5, Norwalk Glenn 3--Tanner Rupp scored two goals, Bill Rimmer had a goal and two assists, and Scott Owen and Jason Boyce each had a goal and an assist for the Sea Kings (7-14-1), who took a 5-1 lead at the half.

Saddleback 3, Artesia 1--Jose Escudero, Juan Viscaino and George Guerrero each scored for host Saddleback (14-4-1). Jose Mesa had eight saves for the Roadrunners, who will play El Monte Tuesday.

In Division 2-A girls’ soccer:

Valencia 3, San Bernardino 2 (2OT)--Senior Heather May scored twice in the second overtime for Valencia (8-6-7). Judy Hlavac, who also assisted on one of May’s goals, scored the other goal for the Tigers early in the first half. Goalkeeper Brandi Bermosk had five saves for Valencia, which advances to play Temecula Valley in the second round Tuesday.

Allyson Maculsay and Kelly Little scored the goals for visiting San Bernardino.

Los Altos 1, Brea-Olinda 0--Los Altos, seeded second in Division 2-A, scored with 15 minutes left in the match to advance to the second round. Julie Evers had eight saves for Brea-Olinda, which finished 7-9-6.

Western 2, Mayfair 1--Western advances to play Corona in the second round Tuesday.
