DIVISION I-AA ROUNDUP : Capistrano Valley Eases Past Fountain Valley by 35

Lacking playoff intensity most of the evening, Capistrano Valley still managed an 84-49 victory over Fountain Valley in a Southern Section I-AA first-round game Friday at Capistrano Valley.

Six players scored in double figures for the second-seeded Cougars (24-3), who will meet Esperanza in Tuesday’s second round. Fountain Valley finished 12-14.

Capistrano Valley scored the first 11 points and led, 20-6, at the end of the first quarter. But the South Coast League champions made only four of 16 field-goal attempts in the second quarter and led, 30-18, at halftime.

Reserve forward Eric Seiffert kept the Cougars going with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half.

Capistrano Valley came out a little more inspired in the second half and built a 46-26 lead on two free throws by Corey Kost with 4 minutes 58 seconds left in the third quarter.

Guy Vaccaro made five of eight three-point attempts in the second half and led the Barons with 19 points.

Tom Airey scored 20 points for Capistrano Valley and sank six three-pointers, including all four attempts in the second half.

In other Division I-AA games:

Santa Ana Valley 56, Millikan 54--Millikan’s Jamie Barragan, fouled on a three-point shot attempt with one second remaining, missed all three free throws as Santa Ana Valley held on to win. Jeff Serrano had 17 points, Anthony Porter had 16 and Omar Zazueta 14 to lead the host Falcons (13-10).

Millikan finished 5-20.

Quartz Hill 37, Westminster 33--Ryan Beckstead scored 13 points and Branden Higa had 15 rebounds for Quartz Hill (17-7). Paul Frechette scored 14 points for Westminster (7-20).
