SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Ocean View forced the action with its up-tempo style of play to defeat University, 57-44, in the first round of the Southern Section I-A girls’ playoffs Saturday night at University High School in Irvine.

University (16-9) opened a 7-0 first-quarter lead as its taller front line, led by Christie Loud, dominated play. But Ocean View’s full-court press managed to speed up the pace, allowing the quicker Lady Hawks to go on a 26-8 run and take a 26-15 lead on Kristy Bell’s three-point play with 4:31 left in the second quarter.

Ocean View’s seventh consecutive victory allowed the Lady Hawks (20-6) to advance to Wednesday’s second round, in which they will play host to Arroyo Grande (14-7).

“The press is our style,” Ocean View Coach Ollie Martin said. “We had to get the tempo up with our press, because if we’d been caught in a half-court game with their size, we’d have had a heck of a time stopping them.”

The Lady Hawks’ hopes were bolstered when Loud got into early foul trouble. She picked up her third foul with 3:35 left in the second quarter, then was called for her fourth early in the second half. She was gone by the end of the third quarter with her fifth.

“Losing Christie in the second half was real critical,” said University Coach Doug Sory. “She was having a great game. We’re a lot better team with her.”

University’s Jennifer Stanley picked up the scoring slack with 18 points and helped the Trojans cut the deficit to seven (51-44) with 1:35 remaining. But Ocean View’s Jill Yonago scored the final six points of the game to end the threat.

Theresa Martini led the balanced Lady Hawk scoring with 12 points.
