GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS : Carlsbad Rolls Past Grossmont

Holly Gerdes and Vanessa Nygaard scored 18 points apiece to lead top-seeded Carlsbad to a 60-38 victory over visiting Grossmont Tuesday night. Carlsbad (20-2) jumped to a nine-point first-quarter lead and was never threatened.

Nygaard also had nine rebounds, Gerdes had seven.

Lancer point guard Renee Demirdjian had six points and nine assists and off guard Dawn Laukes added seven points and six steals. Carlsbad hosts No. 8 Monte Vista Friday night in the quarterfinals.

In other Division II games

Point Loma 52, El Capitan 40--Lisa Griego led No. 2 Point Loma (22-3) with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Stacie Terry had 18 points to lead El Capitan (13-12). Point Loma will play host to Kearny Friday night in the quarterfinals.

Kearny 45, Helix 43--Melissa Krause led No. 7 Kearny with 18 points and her sister Shelly added 12. Helix, which led led 14-6 after a quarter, finished at 15-10.

Monte Vista 46, San Pasqual 30--No. 8 Monte Vista (16-6) earned the right to play at top-seeded Carlsbad Friday night in the semifinals. San Pasqual finished at 12-13.

Division I

Poway 81, San Dieguito 18--Poway’s pressure defense caused 20 turnovers. Jamie Shadian (20 points), Kristen Carlson (15) and Julie Lunardi (12) capitalized on the ensuing fast breaks. The top-ranked Titans will host eighth-seeded Rancho Buena Vista in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Rancho Bernardo 81, Montgomery 30--Robin Blalock broke out of a shooting slump with a season-high 28 points, Carol Pajarillo added 21 and Diane Casey had 13 off the bench, 11 in the fourth quarter, for third-seeded Rancho Bernardo (22-3). The Broncos host sixth-seeded Orange Glen Friday night.

Orange Glen 50, Hilltop 29--Amber Cravey scored 13 points for Orange Glen, but more importantly, she held Hilltop’s leading scorer, Christina Heaps, the county’s sixth-leading scorer, to six points. Heaps was averaging 20 a game for No. 6-seeded Hilltop. Also for Orange Glen (15-10), Jacinta Parker scored 13, Macina Smith added 12 points, and junior Carol Clinger pulled down 27 rebounds.

Rancho Buena Vista 74, Chula Vista 58--Jennifer Harris had a season-high 34 points to lead No. 8 RBV (15-12). Tori Anderson had 16 and Dottie Feeney added 14 for the Longhorns. Chula Vista finished at 11-13.

Division V

La Jolla Country Day 44, Borrego Springs 32--Unseeded La Jolla Country Day (7-12) will play at top-seeded Christian (16-4) tonight at 5:30.

Francis Parker 66, Vincent Memorial 33--No. 5 Francis Parker raced to a 40-15 halftime lead, then borrowed from its bench for much of the game’s remainder. Juli Cheskaty’s 23 points and Tory Rodger’s 17 paced the Lancers (14-8). Teammate Angela Sherman contributed 15 rebounds. Parker will play at second-seeded Bishop’s School (18-5) tonight at 5:30. Vincent Memorial ended at 7-11.
