COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Sweeps Loyola in Volleyball

Ken Lynch recorded 18 kills and Matt Unger had 67 set assists Wednesday to help Cal State Northridge to a 15-4, 15-11, 15-12 Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. win over Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion.

Lynch had a .441 attacking percentage and the Matadors finished with a .456 mark in improving to 7-5, 2-1 in WIVA play. Loyola is 2-15 and winless in eight conference matches.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 82, Southwestern 77--Paula Page scored 31 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Marauders past Southwestern and into a second-round meeting with top-seeded Golden West.

Christi Huff added 14 points and Sasha Garrison had 12 for Antelope Valley (23-7). Southwestern (22-5) was led by Monica Vargas (21 points) and Edna Rodriguez (21).

Golden West 105, Canyons 76--Jennifer Harney set a school record with seven three-point baskets and finished with 42 points as the Rustlers defeated Canyons in the first round of the Southern California playoffs at Golden West.

Shannon Solway had 19 points and eight rebounds and Renata Vavrusa added 16 points for Canyons (16-16). Canyons trailed, 43-30, at halftime.

Harney, a sophomore forward, made 14 of her first 18 shots and finished 17 of 25.

El Camino 59, Ventura 50--Shasta Paris scored a game-high 22 points to pace El Camino in a first-round Southern California regional game at Ventura. Venessa Hackett scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds to lead Ventura (26-7).

BASEBALL

The Master’s 9, Cal Baptist 7--Russ Henzie was two for three and drove in three runs and E. J. Pape was two for four with two runs batted in to lead host Master’s (6-6, 4-0) in an NAIA District 3 game. Bart Jennings (1-1) pitched two innings in relief to earn the win.

Jennings was the fourth of five pitchers who combined to stop Cal Baptist (0-8, 0-1) on 11 hits.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 9, Mt. San Antonio College 3--Heather Santiago pitched her fourth shutout and Tami Keuffman and Heidi Heinl combined for six hits, six runs batted in and a pair of doubles for host Moorpark (5-2) in a nonconference game.

Santiago (4-1) allowed six hits and struck out four.

Pierce 2, Antelope Valley 0--Jennifer Williams was three for three and stole two bases to lead host Pierce (4-4) in a nonconference game. Jodi Soto and Nicole Demarest limited Antelope Valley (2-4) to five hits.

GOLF

Cal Lutheran 404, Pomona-Pitzer 426--Freshman Travis Fisher and junior Troy Carpenter shot five-over-par 77s at Mountain Meadows Golf Course in Pomona to lead the Kingsmen to a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. victory and their first win over Pomona-Pitzer in three years.

Sophomore Russell White shot a 79 and senior Tom Leogrande shot an 81 for Cal Lutheran (3-1, 3-1).

The Kingsmen play Claremont today at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Cal Lutheran’s home course.
