OUTLOOK

Brouwer takes over at Trabuco Hills, replacing Donn Munsell, who left to coach at Laguna Beach. “I think the players are looking forward to a fresh start with a new look and a new coach,” said Brouwer, who’s also an assistant football coach at Trabuco Hills. Pitching is a big question for the Mustangs, with Cleveland the only returning player with varsity experience. He was used sparingly last season, finishing with four saves and a 3.80 earned-run average. Completing the battery is Alvarez, whose defensive skills at catcher and offensive power has coaches from around the league raving. Brouwer bills Alvarez as one of the county’s top players. “He’s excellent defensively,” Brouwer said. Alvarez hit .350 last year with five home runs and 25 runs batted in. The Mustangs also should get some offense from Gomez, a switch-hitter who batted .350 with 15 RBIs last season, Kerr, who hit .320 as a sophomore, and Salz, who hit .290. Although the Mustangs are in a transitional phase, they’re traditionally among the top teams in the league. They finished third last year behind Laguna Hills and Estancia, and a majority of the league coaches predict the Mustangs will have another top-three finish.
