OUTLOOK

Hays, now in his second year with the Tartans, has two-thirds of the more important angles covered--hitting and defense. All-leaguers Hanzlik (.469 batting average and 26 runs batted in last year), Luhrs (.423 and 21 RBIs) and Cecil (.301) carry the offense, along with Rodriguez (.313 and 23 stolen bases). “We should be pretty solid through the first seven spots in the lineup,” Hays said. “We’ll do a lot of hit-and-run and steals because we don’t have a heck of a lot of power. We’ll have to manufacture runs.” The middle of the infield, he said, is in good hands with Cecil and Luhrs. “We should be good there, which we’ll need to be,” Hays said. But the critical department on the team is pitching, where Hays lost the two pitchers who combined for the nine victories. One, right-hander Adam Childres, won five of those games and batted more than .600 with three home runs and 30 RBIs, but he decided to skip baseball to concentrate on golf this season. The other, Ricky Guy, transferred to Santa Margarita. That leaves Hays with Kelley and Miller as the two starters, with Cecil behind them. “It’s going to be interesting,” Hays said.
