Because Palaferri, a first-team, all-league pitcher last season, returns for his senior year, the Sailors have a good chance at winning at least half their games. Palaferri, who was 7-3 with a 2.22 earned-run average and 61 strikeouts in 63 innings last season, should again be the league’s dominant pitcher. But Coach Bates worries about the rest of his inexperienced staff. “For our No. 2 guy, we may have to throw the squad,” Bates said, laughing. “Throw Palaferri 14 innings every week. But I guess we can’t do that.” Actually, Stewart and Anderson will battle for the No. 2 spot. Bates says Rogers is one of the strongest defensive catchers in the county and that center fielder Coluccio, a football and soccer standout, can get to most anything hit. Stewart and McKown were both second-team, all-league infielders and Murphy was a second-team outfielder, adding to the Sailors’ returning talent. But Bates said a number of the players hit poorly last season and he hopes that they will follow the lead of Bowen and Stewart, who each hit in the mid-.300s.
