Senior swingman Marquis Burns of Reseda High finished with a 26.6-point scoring average to edge Cleveland junior Shawn Bankhead (25.9) and Verdugo Hills junior Eddie Powell (24.2) and win the Valley’s City Section scoring title.

Burns, a two-time most valuable player in the West Valley League who will play next season at UCLA, reached double figures in scoring in every game (43) of the past two seasons.

Burns’ scoring average is the highest among City players from the Valley since Kevin Franklin of Taft averaged 31.6 points in 1986-87. Franklin, a superlative perimeter shooter, played before the three-point basket was added to the high school game.

Scoring: Senior guard Casey Sheahan of Taft scored 1,085 points in his three-year career, an average of 15.3 points a game. It is the second-highest per-game average in school history. Franklin averaged 23.4 points in his three-year career (1985-87). . . .

Buena senior guard Lance Fay became the school’s all-time leading scorer Friday. Fay has 1,611 points, eclipsing the record of 1,595 set by Jeff Oliver (1988-90). . . .

Simi Valley senior forward Danny Alexander finished with 526 points, the ninth-highest single-season total at the school. With 819 points, Alexander ranks seventh all-time. . . .

Joe Ferguson of Canyon scored 703 points in his two-year career to place sixth on the school’s scoring list. Ferguson’s 472 points this season was the fifth-highest single-season total in school history. Ferguson also had 495 rebounds, third-highest total in school history. . . .

North Hollywood senior guards Robert Hill and DeShawn Harvey have been models of consistency. Hill (14.1 average) has scored in double figures in the past eight games and in 14 of the past 15. Harvey (15.3) has scored in double figures in 15 of the past 16 games. Furthermore, Harvey has scored 23 or more points in three of the past five games. . . .

Grant’s Wayne Carlisle shot 54.4% (147 of 270) from the field and 73.5% (72 of 98) from the free-throw line this season. Carlisle, a 6-foot-8 senior center, leads the region’s City players with three blocked shots per game (69 in 23 games).

Assists: Simi Valley junior point guard Ryan Briggs finished with 187 assists, the third-best season total in school history. Briggs has 221 assists, fifth on the school’s all-time list. He must average more than eight per game next season to eclipse Butch Hawking’s record of 438 set from 1985-88. . . .

Kyle Augustus of Sherman Oaks CES has been the area’s City Section assist leader throughout the season. Augustus, a senior point guard, finished with 197 assists in 22 games (8.9 average) and averaged 12 assists in his final three games. “I told him to quit shooting and just concentrate on passing,” Sherman Oaks CES Coach Mac Becker said. “I said, ‘Maybe you can be the assist champion because you’re certainly not going to win it for scoring points.’ ”

Milestones: Rio Mesa made its first appearance in a Southern Section semifinal Tuesday. The Spartans won their first three playoff games by a total of nine points, including two overtime victories. . . . Santa Paula has set school single-season records for victories (20) and playoff wins (three). . . . North Hollywood has set school records for consecutive victories (22) and victories in a season (26). . . . Simi Valley (22-6 overall) finished 13-0 at home.

Family ties: Junior second baseman Tevin Nelson is the fourth Nelson brother to play for Simi Valley Coach Mike Scyphers in Scyphers’ 14 years as head coach. Tom, who graduated in 1982, Tim (1983) and Tyler (1991) also played for Scyphers.

Boys’ soccer: In only his second start of the season, Kennedy goalie Francisco Reynoso saved 20 shots in the Golden Cougars’ 1-0 double overtime victory in a City Section quarterfinal match against Palisades on Friday. . . . Senior goalie Steve Hambly of Royal (19-3-1) finished the season with 16 shutouts, two short of the school record.

Girls’ soccer: Simi Valley senior goalkeeper Jennifer Holman recorded her 50th shutout and her 22nd of the season, both school records, in the Pioneers’ 2-0 Southern Section 4-A Division playoff win over Esperanza on Friday. . . . Michelle Aasen, a freshman goalkeeper for Alemany, finished the season with 17 shutouts, helping the Indians to a 19-5-2 record.
