Undefeated Artman of Thousand Oaks Heads Area Contingent in State Meet

Sixteen wrestlers from 10 area high schools, led by undefeated Jack Artman of Thousand Oaks, have made their way to Stockton for today’s state wrestling finals at University of the Pacific.

The two-day double-elimination tournament includes 416 wrestlers competing in 13 weight classes. Regional wrestlers qualified for the meet by either finishing among the top seven qualifiers in each class in last week’s Southern Section Masters meet or winning a City Section championship.

Southern Section champions include John Jimenez (119 pounds), Matt Jones (140) and Scott Adams (34-1 in the 189-pound class) of Ventura; Artman (34-0 at 145); and Jason Pratt of Newbury Park (152).

City champions scheduled to compete include David Duran (112) and Matt Austin (160) of El Camino Real; Manuel Anaya (130) and brother Gerardo (heavyweight), and Nate Green (171) of San Fernando; and Ralph Palacios (135) and Phil Duffield (189) of Canoga Park.

Will Arreola of Alemany and Joel Hansen of Quartz Hill will compete at 152 pounds after placing sixth and seventh in the Masters meet.

Gregg Crisp of Westlake (189), who placed fifth in the Masters, and Simi Valley heavyweight Mark Smith, who placed third, also will compete.
