OUTLOOK
Last year, the Monarchs posted a school-best 22-4 record and advanced to the Southern Section Division 5-A quarterfinals after winning the league championship. The news is good again in 1992 because Mater Dei returns seven starters and several other experienced players. “In all, we’ve got nine kids back who played quite a bit last year,” Quesnell said. “We’ve got a good mix of team chemistry and talent.” Quesnell, in her seventh season at Mater Dei, will rely heavily on Cline, who led Mater Dei with a .314 average last year. Mater Dei’s primary battery of Cline and Clark, who had a 1.12 earned-run average with 75 strikeouts last year, will be one of the league’s best. Clark also hit .287, and O’Beck hit .285. Quesnell said she expects Mater Dei to be more consistent offensively this season. “We were a young team last year, and now we’re an experienced team,” Quesnell said. “I think that difference will show up at the plate.” Terri Kobata adds pitching depth, and Kollen and Dawn Kobata anchor the infield.
