SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

When Estancia’s Matt Fuerbringer elevates his game to a higher level, the Eagles show why they are the defending State Division III champions.

Tuesday night, Fuerbringer’s game was mostly above the rim as he led the Eagles to a 59-41 victory over University of San Diego High in the first round of the Southern California Division III boys’ regional playoffs at the University of San Diego.

Fuerbringer scored 32 points, making 14 of 17 shots, and added 12 rebounds and three assists as the Eagles (24-7) recovered from a sluggish first quarter with a 17-0 run in the second to advance to Thursday’s second-round game against host La Canada (27-2). La Canada, the top-seeded team, defeated La Jolla, 58-36.

“Matt was the big difference,” Estancia Coach Tim O’Brien said. “I told him he’s got to be in the game in the end. He’s our leader and we need him to finish for us.”

With the score tied at 17, Fuerbringer stole the ball and drove the length of the court for a two-handed dunk, and Estancia was off and running.

Jeff Byrne scored a couple of baskets, Fuerbringer scored two more field goals and reserve guard Russell King hit a three-point shot with 2:03 remaining to give Estancia a 31-17 lead.

Fuerbringer scored six points to open the third quarter for a 40-21 lead with 6:43 remaining. University’s 9-0 run narrowed the margin to 40-30.

But Fuerbringer ended University’s rally with a basket and another steal that led to a dunk with 3:23 remaining, putting Estancia safely ahead, 44-30.

John Johnson’s basket with 6:18 left in the game put Estancia ahead, 57-35, and allowed O’Brien to empty his bench. University (9-18) was led by Jerry Prior’s eight points.
