OUTLOOK

In 13 years as coach at Connelly, Henry has consistently turned out winning teams. The Koalas have won nine league championships and qualified for the playoffs 13 consecutive years during Henry’s tenure. “We’ve been blessed with enough talent to stay a competitive program for a long time,” Henry said. “We’re young and inexperienced in a lot of places this year, but I think we’ll develop into a good group again.” Connelly is led by Carlson, Alcantar and Rana, a trio of returning all-league players. Alcantar was the Koalas’ only pitcher of record last year, compiling a 14-4 record while hitting .400. Henry expects Alcantar again to handle the bulk of the pitching duties. Carlson hit .320 and returns at second base, while Rana (.300) returns to anchor the outfield. Grover is Connelly’s other returning starter and will team with shortstop Shepos on the left side of the infield. “Our hitting is our strength,” Henry said. “We’ve got quite a few players who should hit consistently.” Cervantes is expected to provide a strong arm in center field, while Hansen and Rowena Rana are other newcomers expected to have an impact right away. Defending league champion San Pedro Mary Star is again the league favorite.
