One inning into Hart High’s Westside tournament baseball game against Taft on Saturday, right-hander Doug Distaso had scored more runs than the opposition would score the entire game. He would not be matched on the mound, either.

In the top of the first inning, Distaso, a senior and Hart’s leadoff batter, walked, stole second and third, and scored what proved to be the winning run.

Distaso, who never before had pitched in organized ball, threw a one-hitter, struck out three and walked three as Hart won, 2-0.

As far as first starts go, Distaso was in command.

Other than the third inning, he faced the minimum number of batters--with some help from his friends.

With two out in the fifth inning, Taft’s Warren Peck lined a pinch-single to right but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. In the sixth, Taft’s Matt Allison reached base on an error but was erased when John Erganian grounded into a double play.

Distaso, a wide receiver on the football team, needed just 88 pitches--22 in the third inning. He also finished with four stolen bases.

Seniors Angel Aragon and Jose Gastelum, the top returning Channel Islands players, needed only one game to find their groove.

Aragon, a senior right-hander who was 10-2 last year and has signed to play at Cal State Long Beach, struck out 13 and gave up just four hits in Channel Islands’ 3-1 win over Alemany in a Westside tournament opener Saturday. Gastelum, a senior catcher who hit .424 last season, had two hits and drove in all three of Channel Islands’ runs. . . .

Simi Valley junior Kevin Nykoluk had driven in four runs, including two with a home run, when rain washed out the host Pioneers’ 5-2 lead over L. A. Banning in an El Segundo tournament game Friday. But Nykoluk, named sophomore of the year by Cal-Hi Sports last season, hit a solo home run in Simi Valley’s 7-3 win over Banning the next day. This time, it counted. . . .

Taft’s Stacey Kleiner, who batted .375 last season as a sophomore and is regarded as one of the region’s best catching prospects, had a busy day in his team’s opener against Hart. Kleiner nailed three would-be base thieves, plus one baserunner on an attempted steal of home. However, Hart players stole seven bases. . . .

Rio Mesa senior forward Jeff Howatt played in the Spartans’ 58-47 loss to Artesia in a Southern Section Division II-AA semifinal basketball game last week. Four days later, Howatt turned pitcher and threw a four-hitter in Rio Mesa’s 3-0 win over Beverly Hills in a Westside tournament game. Howatt, 6-foot-5, struck out eight and did not allow an extra-base hit. . . .
