Notes: Newport Harbor is the favorite in Division I of Saturday’s Orange County Championships at Newport Harbor. But look for strong challenges from Irvine, Capistrano Valley, and defending champion Huntington Beach. Laguna Beach could be the sleeper. . . . County teams ranked in the Southern Section preseason coaches’ poll: Division 4-A--1. Newport Harbor, 4. Edison, 8. Huntington Beach, 10. Dana Hills. Division 3-A--3. Esperanza. Division 2-A--1. Whittier Christian, 2. Calvary Chapel. . . . Edison has one of the county’s best players in Joe McCarthy, but the Chargers have struggled, losing in five games to Newport Harbor and getting swept by Woodbridge. . . . Boys’ volleyball continues to grow in popularity. According to the Southern Section, there are 218 teams participating in 28 leagues. Five years ago, 138 schools fielded teams in 13 leagues.
