Patrick Henry’s amazing run through the San Diego Section Division I boys’ soccer playoffs ended at the championship, when it met up with second-seeded Mira Mesa.

In its first title game ever, Mira Mesa cruised to a 4-1 victory over unseeded Henry in the championship at Torrey Pines Thursday night.

“They were real aggressive,” said Henry Coach Don Shaffer. “We just didn’t play well. The guys tried hard, we had an awesome season and I’m real proud of them. A 19-3-1 record is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Mira Mesa (22-1-2) scored eight minutes into the game, but the Patriots answered right back with a tying goal 20 seconds later. The Marauders scored again to put them up, 2-1, at the half, then struck twice in the second half and holding Henry scoreless.

Henry had upset fourth-seeded San Dieguito then upended defending champion and top-seeded San Diego, both in shootouts.

“Looking at the playoff draw, we predicted early the the survivor of our bracket might be too beat up in the finals,” Shaffer said. “But not excuses. We just didn’t have a good night. Mira Mesa played well.”

GIRLS’

San Dieguito 3, Bonita Vista 0--Neither team could muster any offense in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie.

There was little movement in the first 15 minutes of the second half as well, but at that point, San Dieguito Coach Dave Emmerson altered his attack and sent fullback Karla See up to the offensive front.

“It’s a move we do a lot when we need to get something going,” Emerson said. “It kind of leaves us vulnerable in the back, but I figured it was worth it to try to open something up.”

Only two minutes later, See made the gamble pay off with the game’s first goal.

In the game’s 71st minute, Allie Kemp made it 2-0, and two minutes later Amy Comte scored the game’s final goal. Cindy Carullo assisted on both goals.

San Dieguito finished with a record of 24-0-1 and Bonita Vista finished at 23-3-3.
