OUTLOOK

Buonarigo has no intentions of forecasting the league race. “I’m not Jeane Dixon . . . I don’t make predictions,” he said. Good, because Buonarigo’s diagnosis of his team has already gone awry. “I thought defense would be a strength, and we made six errors in a scrimmage already,” Buonarigo said. “I thought we could bunt, but we also missed two bunts.” He anticipates his defense will come around with more game experience, but that’s not the least of the Mustangs’ problems. With Gina Miller graduated and pitching for Orange Coast College, Buonarigo will rely on two untested arms. Juniors Ward and Ospina will carry the bulk of the pitching load and neither has pitched on the varsity level. “They’re improving each week,” Buonarigo said. “I think we have a shot at third place, but realistically I think it’s a two-year rebuilding period. If we can finish on an up level, we’ll go into next year real strong.” Marino is the Mustangs’ top player, hitting .375 last season while playing strong defense at first base.
