HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Beasley Bats .727 to Pace Simi Valley to Title in Softball Tournament

Kathy Beasley was two for four and drove in two runs and Sara Griffin allowed only two hits to lead Simi Valley High past Alemany, 4-0, Saturday in the championship game of the Simi Valley softball tournament.

Beasley batted .727 in the tournament and was named the most valuable player. Amy Powell added two hits and two runs batted in for Simi Valley (4-0), which won the tournament title for the second consecutive season.

In a semifinal game, Jessica Cunningham was two for four and drove in three runs as Simi Valley beat Burroughs, 5-3.

In other softball games:

Saugus 6, Hoover 2--Saugus overcame 16 strikeouts by Hoover’s Nancy Evans to win the championship of the Hart tournament. In a semifinal, Evans (3-1) struck out nine and hit a solo home run that proved to be the game-winner in Hoover’s 9-8 win over Hart.

Alemany 4, Buena 1--Krista Gomez stroked a two-run homer for the Indians (3-1) in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift Alemany in a semifinal of the Simi Valley tournament.

La Reina 2, San Marcos 0--Valerie Serpico drove in both runs for the Regents (3-2) in the fifth-place game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Crescenta Valley 6, Artesia 1--Stacy Atwood (4-0) struck out 10 in four innings and collected two hits and two RBIs as the Falcons won a second-round game of the Downey tournament.

Righetti 3-2, Thousand Oaks 2-3-- Julie Olin went three for four with a run scored and Carrie Russell struck out the final batter with the tying run on third to give the Lancers a split of a doubleheader at Righetti. The Warriors won the opener in eight innings.

BASEBALL

Crespi 11, Edison 3--The Celts (4-0) parlayed eight hits, two walks and two errors into nine first-inning runs and won an El Segundo Tournament semifinal at Edison (3-1).

Simi Valley 8, Cerritos 5--Kevin Nykoluk belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to boost the Pioneers (3-1) to an El Segundo tournament win at home. The home run, Nykoluk’s second of the game, also helped him pick up a win in relief.

Aaron Whitley and Nykoluk had back-to-back home runs in a five-run fifth inning. Ryan Briggs drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to start the scoring.

Notre Dame 7, Ventura 1--A two-run double by Jimmy Landress in the second inning gave host Notre Dame (3-1-1) an early lead in a Westside tournament game. Chris Garza (3-0) struck out seven and allowed Ventura (1-2-1) only two hits.

Taft 19, Canyon 4--Gabe Kapler went four for six with three RBIs to lead Taft (2-2-1) in a Westside tournament game at Canyon. Of Taft’s 21 hits, 20 were singles.

Saugus 3, Sylmar 1--Visiting Saugus (3-2) scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-0 lead in a Westside tournament game. Bobby Cowan scored Saugus’ second run on an error and Mike Hogen scored on Scott Ribbons’ suicide squeeze.

Harvard-Westlake 5, Camarillo 4--The Wolverines scored twice with two out in the bottom of the seventh to steal a Westside tournament game. Todd Lemkin singled to score Max Sank with the winning run.

Rio Mesa 13, Chaminade 9--Jon McMullen’s grand slam with one out in the third gave Rio Mesa (3-1-1) a 12-6 lead in the Westside tournament game.

Hueneme 8, L.A. Marshall 5--Juan Ponce hit a single, double and home run and Mike Ortega went four for four with two doubles for visiting Hueneme in a Westside tournament game.

Alemany 6, Oxnard 0--Sophomore Greg Kmet hurled a two-hitter and struck out six to lead the Indians (2-3) in the Westside tournament. Rene Rodriguez, Brian Shaw, Andy Dominique each had two hits for Alemany.

Northview 8, Crescenta Valley 7--David Fielder hit a grand slam for Crescenta Valley (2-2) in a Glendora tournament consolation game that was called after 4 1/2 innings because of darkness. Josh Canale added his third homer, a two-run shot in the third that gave Crescenta Valley a 3-2 lead.

Van Nuys 3, Hollywood 0--Jaime Chacon pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine in an L. A. Invitational game. Alex Alvarenga had three hits for the Wolves (2-0).

La Canada 6-6, L.A. Baptist 5-5--La Canada (3-1) scored three runs with two out in the seventh inning to win the opener, then added a run in the seventh inning of the second game to complete a sweep.
