PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar’s 14 Runs Smother Newport Harbor

Corona del Mar’s offense teed off on Newport Harbor for 14 runs for the second time this season, and the result was a 14-6 victory Saturday in the rescheduled Sea View League baseball opener for both teams at Newport Harbor High School.
Corona del Mar (4-1, 1-0 in league), which defeated the Sailors, 14-9, in the Newport Elks tournament, had 18 hits and took advantage of five Newport Harbor errors.
Center fielder Todd Kehrli led the offense, going three for four with a three-run home run in the fifth, when Corona del Mar scored seven runs to take a 12-2 lead.
Tim DeCinces was three for three with a double, Mike Susson lined a pair of doubles down the left field line and third baseman Dan MacMillan had two hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth.
All of Corona del Mar’s runs in the fifth were unearned because of three Newport Harbor errors.
Newport Harbor (3-3, 0-1) was led by Matt Steward (three for three) and Chris Bowen (two-run homer).
George Chelius (4-0) was the winner.
