Sherry Ringer, a volunteer coach for the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball team the past two years, was appointed interim head coach Tuesday, Titan Athletic Director Bill Shumard said.

Ringer, who is head of the physical education department at Parks Junior High School in Fullerton, replaces Jim Huffman, who was fired Monday after three seasons. Ringer’s contract extends through June 30.

Fullerton announced it was dropping volleyball Jan. 28, but Huffman filed a lawsuit against the school and won a preliminary injunction in Orange County Superior Court toblock the move.

Terms of the injunction called for Fullerton to provide “appropriate coaching” for the team, and Kirk Boyd, attorney representing the team in the court case, said he will not challenge the school’s choice of a coach.

“I’m assuming she’ll have the full powers and authorities Huffman had, including the same budget,” Boyd said. “As long as she’s able to bring in an assistant coach, that should be OK.”

Ringer has coached at Brea-Olinda, Sunny Hills and Rosary high schools and is a co-director of the recently organized Titan Juniors Volleyball Club, based at Cal State Fullerton. She played volleyball at Laguna Beach High and Cal Poly Pomona and earned a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific.

Day in court: Boyd said a June 4 court date has been set for a permanent injunction hearing, in which the fate of the Titan volleyball team will be decided. The hearing will go before Superior Court Judge Floyd Schenk, who last week awarded the team a preliminary injunction.

Rain delay: Inclement weather has forced Fullerton to push back the opening of the Titan Sports Complex. The Fullerton baseball team had hoped to play in the new stadium beginning April 1, but that date has been pushed back to at least April 10. The Titans host Nevada Las Vegas in a three-game series April 10-12.

Drafted: Herman Webster, a 6-foot-7 forward who played two seasons (1985-87) for the Titan basketball team, was the seventh player selected out of 120 in Tuesday’s World Basketball League draft. Webster, who averaged 11 points and eight rebounds this season for Tulsa of the Continental Basketball Assn., was picked by the Youngstown Pride of the WBL.
