PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Santivenez’s Single in 7th Sparks Katella Past Loara

Jesse Santivenez had a two-run single in the seventh to cap a three-run rally for host Katella in a 7-6 victory over Loara in an Empire League baseball game Wednesday at Boysen Park in Anaheim.

Katella’s rally became necessary when Loara scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. Katella’s Eric Gardiner had a run-scoring single in the seventh before Santivenez’s game-winning hit for Katella (4-5, 2-0 in league).

In other Empire League games:

El Dorado 10, Esperanza 3--Third baseman Tyson DowDell went four for four, including a double, and catcher Brian Loyd had a double and a bases-empty home run to pace visiting El Dorado. Right-hander Shawn Holcomb (1-1) went the distance for the Golden Hawks (5-3, 1-1). Esperanza dropped to 4-4, 1-1.

Cypress 6, Los Alamitos 2--Senior Ken Fann had an RBI double for visiting Cypress (4-4, 2-0). Steve Davis (2-1) pitched four innings for the victory for Cypress.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 9, Servite 5--In a league opener, Mater Dei’s Cale Carter broke open a close game with a three-run home run in the fifth. Carter’s hit followed a double by Mike McDonald and an infield single by Dave Augustus, and made the score 9-4.

Santa Margarita 3, Loyola 1--Joey Farris hit a two run triple in the third inning for Santa Margarita (5-2, 1-0). Gordon Williams (2-0) was the winning pitcher.

In the Century League:

Canyon 4, Santa Ana Valley 1--John Schumacker had two singles, a double and a two-run triple for visiting Canyon (5-3, 1-1). Matt Kastelic had a a triple, double and a single and scored two runs also for the Comanches. Jarrod Kula (3-0) pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts.

Orange 6, El Modena 5--Gary Folsom went four for four, with two RBIs, including a bases-loaded single with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give Orange (4-4, 1-1) the victory. El Modena is 0-2 in league.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 5, Garden Grove 1--Right-hander Scott Jones had a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth inning before Garden Grove’s Bryce McHale broke it up with a single up the middle. Jones finished with six strikeouts and gave up three walks, two in the first. He also had two RBIs. Third baseman Daric Grove was two for four with two RBIs for Kennedy (6-2, 1-0). Garden Grove is now 1-2, 0-1.

La Quinta 13, Los Amigos 3--Third baseman Chad Leckie went four for five with one double, a home run and four RBIs for visiting La Quinta (6-2, 1-0). Jose Trejo added three hits in three at-bats and two RBIs. Jim Livernois, a sophomore right-hander, went only three innings but picked up his second victory of the year. Los Amigos dropped to 0-7, 0-1.

Pacifica 5, Rancho Alamitos 1--Pacifica’s Jeff Wozniak hit his first home run of the season in the fourth inning, driving in Eric Stevens to break up a 1-1 tie. Dave Anderson had a double and a single for Pacifica (6-3, 1-0). Rancho Alamitos is 2-2, 0-1.

Santiago 9, Bolsa Grande 1--Geoff Nosey had three hits and drove in three run and David Sarno had three hits and two RBIs for visiting Santiago (5-3, 1-0). Zac Bustos had a single in the bottom of the seventh for Bolsa Grande’s only hit off three Santiago pitchers.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 5, La Habra 2 (9 innings)--Junior right-hander Alfredo Garcia (2-1) pitched a five-hitter over nine innings with 13 strikeouts and one walk. He allowed two unearned runs in the seventh inning. Angel Barrios had an RBI fielder’s choice to break a 2-2 tie in the ninth for visiting Buena Park (4-5, 1-1).

Fullerton 10, Troy 5--Colin Wood had two home runs for Fullerton (4-3, 2-0), and Jim White added one home run. Brent Coon had a home run for Troy (1-6, 0-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 4, Magnolia 3--Matt Priess’ two-run single in the sixth knocked in the tying and winning runs for the visiting Wildcats (5-1, 1-0). Left-hander Andy Smith went the distance for Brea, striking out seven, for his first complete game of season. Magnolia is now 0-2 in league.

Valencia 13, Western 2--Eric Ensman had three hits and drove in three runs and Harold Ceron had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for host Valencia (5-2, 2-0). Jim Nagel didn’t allow a hit in five innings and struck out two for Valencia.

Savanna 4, Anaheim 1--Visiting Savanna (3-4, 1-0) scored four runs in the fourth inning and Steve Krier (1-0) pitched a five-hitter for the Rebels.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 5, Laguna Beach 3--Senior right-hander Mike Smith scattered four hits in five innings and struck out two for the victory at Estancia. Center-fielder Matt Johner went two for three with one RBI and second baseman Jose Hernandez was two for three with two RBIs for Estancia (4-3, 2-0). Laguna Beach is now 2-5, 1-1.

Trabuco Hills 7, Costa Mesa 3--T.J. Alveraz and Dario Salz had doubles for host Trabuco Hills (3-3, 1-0). A.J. Cleveland pitched six innings for the victory.

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 8, Corona del Mar 1--Winning pitcher Steve Zuniga hit a three-run home run for Saddleback (7-1, 2-0) in the fourth inning. Zuniga (1-0) struck out six batters. Jimmy Fernandez also homered for the Roadrunners.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 5, Mission Viejo 4--Scott Seal hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning, with two out, to bring Irvine within a run at 4-3. In the seventh inning, the Vaqueros got back-to-back singles from Loc Tran and Chad Baker and then Tran scored on an error, tying it, 4-4. Tommie Louie then singled in the winning run for Irvine (4-4, 1-0). Mission Viejo is 4-2, 0-1.
